I am not a man, I am DY-NO-MITE!

Crazy Spirit + Ancestors "I" + "II".

CRAZY SPIRIT

Crazy Spirit will mindfuck you with their abrasive, inventive but still simple and catchy rock and fucking roll. This band is proving that the wild energy of punk is still capable of possessing the souls and bodies of a bunch of fucking kids with guitars and shit and turning them into raging monsters making a racket to peel the paint off the walls and the skin off a million pansy ass dilettantes and weak kneed posers. Four punx taking a basic rock and roll structure and a relentless 1-2, Crass meets Bone Awl on doodoocaca island drum beat and injecting it with with weirdly timed cymbal hits. The guitar squeals out classic simple riffs that somehow sound fresh and coalesce with each other in a thematic way throughout all the songs, and the bass slithers throughout the guitar lines, complementing melodies or lurking in the low end. Topping off this noise are slimy, snotty, sleazy vocals that unexpectedly bring to mind an even more crazed Sam McPheeters at his most unhinged and a wild stage performance. Honestly, I wish these guys weren't my friends so it doesn't seem like I'm sucking dicks for scene cred or some other such nonsense, but fuck it. Crazy Spirit rules.

POSTSCRIPT: Their demo is great cause you can hear the songs and shit and has really cool artwork etc, but it really pales in comparison to the real live spirit. It doesn't quite justify their sound cuz it's too quiet but is still a great document of a great band. If any of you cretins get a chance, pick it up.

No fake rockers can come and hang...

This flyer rules but the scan sucks. Anyway.....

August 3rd saw one of NYC's best local punk shows in a good while. People came out from all over this godforsaken city and went crazy for every band. Newcomers Nomad impressed with some loud ass, noisy D-beasting raw shit in the Disclose vein with lyrics shouted with serious conviction in Japanese. My band Dawn of Humans played and it was hectic; I jumped into the crowd and fucked my boy Mike's face up with my bass. Thriller's set killed, their brand of punk as fuck NYHC was perfect for getting low and fucking shit up.

Then NYC raw punk darlings Perdition took the stage. It was their tour kick off show and one of their first since Alex their guitarist broke his hand skating. Holy fuck. The Rock Star Bar fucking blew up; it seemed like everyone was violent pogoing or hate moshing (hahaha...). I thought back to their first show, also at the same venue, also batshit crazy, opening for Rotten Cadaver in 2007(?), and realized how much more of a destructive and devastating force they've become. They've progressed lightyears and are deservedly reigning kings of the NYC punk scene.

Headliners Brain Killer (grab their demo below), fresh back from their tour, provided a fitting closer for the night. These dudes have perfected their craft and are one of the mightiest hardcore bands playing these days. Seek out all their shit if you haven't already; between them and Perdition, it seems US raw fucking punk is being kicked into some next level shit. Pretty exciting if you ask me.

Below some videos of Perdition that night, stolen from Jack Crank's blog, No Gods No Vegetables. Thanks Jack!

The Total Arse

Here is a video of Framtid destroying a crowd in Osaka with their untouchable brand of devastating maniacal raw punk. Its the sound of your ears deafening from a blitzkrieg air raid on your neighborhood; just intense, fucked up, scary noise and the creeping realization that everything is fucked. This is about as good as it gets with this kind of shit. This video has 2 songs from Burning Spirits, including the fucking classic anthem "Consuming Shit and Mind Pollution." Not for the weak!

UNO CON KAOS

Volahn! Fuck! Volahn is a one man band playing black metal of a mystical and uncanny hue. After digging the digital version of "Dimensiones del Trance Kosmico" for some time, I finally got a hold of it in physical form at their NYC tour date, which I did not attend in spite of Thurston Moore's attempts to get me in (after he serenaded my buddies and I with Discharge!). Stoked to have this LP, it is definitely one of the better black metal albums to come out recently. I got to see the Bone Awl/Volahn/Ashdautas tour down in Philly at Disgraceland, and, while all the bands were awesome, Volahn was absolutely fucking incredible. The place just exploded when they played and it was altogether really powerful shit. This album was apparently four years in the making, and it shows--it is superbly crafted, well written black metal full of strange, dissonant melodies and lyrics in spanish invoking ritual kaos to alchemize flesh into stars. This is out now on Klaxon Records, grab it before it's gone!

the breaking wheel

Here is the demo from Boston's Brain Killer, an ear decimating testament to burly raw punk brutality. I just saw these guys twice in the past 2 days here in NYC and they absolutely fucking destroyed, especially at 538 Johnson on Friday night. My ears havent stopped ringing and I doubt they will for a while. This is one of the best fucking punk bands around, with a sound that rivals greats such as (everyone says this and i hate to repeat it but its true) Japan's almighty Bastard and a guitar tone that strikes the perfect balance between deafening feedbacking noise and the clarity necessary to hear the sweet riffs. This demo has just been repressed onto a 7", and they have just released a new 7" that I've heard but have yet to pick up. Highly recommended!
